I see. What type of visa are you on, and what is the reason for requesting employment authorization? That will determine which category you fall under on Form I-765.

For post-completion OPT, you need to file Form I-765 along with your I-20 endorsed by your designated school official. You should apply no earlier than ninety days before graduation and no later than sixty days after.

Processing times vary, but typically three to five months. You cannot start working until you have the EAD card in hand and your OPT start date has arrived. You can check your case status online using the receipt number.

Unfortunately, you must wait. Working without a valid EAD is a violation of your status. If it has been more than ninety days since filing, you can contact USCIS to request an expedite based on financial hardship.

You should file a new I-765 as a renewal. We recommend filing at least six months before expiration to avoid any gap in your work authorization. The filing fee is four hundred and ten dollars.

If you filed the renewal before your current EAD expired, you may be eligible for an automatic extension of up to one hundred and eighty days. Your receipt notice serves as proof of continued work authorization during that time.

You will need a copy of your current EAD card, two passport-style photos, the I-765 form, and supporting documents based on your eligibility category. If your status has changed since the last filing, include updated evidence.

USCIS now offers online filing for most I-765 categories. You can create an account on uscis.gov, upload your documents, and pay the fee electronically. It is actually faster and easier to track than paper filing.
